"There’ll be no flirting, that’s for sure.  It’s not what this Doctor is concerned with.  It’s quite a fun relationship, but no, I did call and say ‘I want no Papa-Nicole moments’.  I think there was a bit of tension with that at first, but I was absolutely adamant."

    Dear dad,?

    Dear Dad,

    do you remember

reading the Hobbit to me at four in the morning on a lengthy airplane ride when I was eight years old, raising your voice until the roar of the wind and the cries of that toddler disappeared, lost in the steady thrum of your voice and dark trees of Mirkwood behind my eyelids.

    do you remember

taking me to used bookstores and buying me an armful of comic books, even though my mother told you not to, listening intently as I dictated Iron Man’s recent adventures on the rumbling car ride home.

    do you remember

drinking scotch and playing video games with me way past my bedtime, guiding me down dark passageways and making me laugh until I cried

    do you remember

taking me to that Buddhist temple at the edge of the city and closing your eyes and telling me to listen to the sound of the silence, slipping your shoes off in the rock garden so you could feel the pebbles between your toes

    do you remember

teaching me to love myself and respect the world, not caring about my mistakes or shortcomings. making me see how kindness can be powerful, and how to find the goodness in all people. You taught me to be brave

    send me these!

    Dear future me,

    Dear future me,

You terrify me. I lie awake at night and try to glimpse the stars the hide beneath your shadow, but they’re lost among the ceiling and the looming clouds. You consume my mind, lurking on the lips of my parents and hovering behind the dark eyes of my friends. Surfacing from the little print letters on my report card; a bucket of ice water. You know me better than anyone. But I don’t know you at all.

    send me these!
